Yarl’s Wood detainee cleared of assault against guards

A Nigerian woman was today cleared of assaulting guards UK during a violent attempt to remove her from the UK.

The Guardian today includes distressing footage of the incident in which the woman sustained multiple injuries at the hands of the guards :  “Woman cleared of assaulting Yarl’s Wood guards during struggle“

Emma Ginn, Director of Medical Justice said ;

“The judge concluded that the lead guard in a use of force briefing was going to use force “come what may”.

Removal windows case : BBC2 Victoria Derbyshire programme interviews two men removed from the UK

Mr A and Mr AT were both removed from the UK. The Home Office was ordered to bring them back. The BBC2 Victoria Derbyshire programme interviewed them both yesterday, together with Theresa Schleicher of Medical Justice. Watch the interview here which starts at It starts at 46 mins 41 secs.

High Court suspends unscrupulous policy of removing unwanted migrants from the UK without warning

The Home Office removals policy enabling it to refuse a migrant’s case and forcibly remove them from the UK, within hours and in many cases without access to legal representation, was suspended by a High Court judge today, potentially tearing the heart out of the government’s “hostile environment” strategy against migrants.

Supreme Court reasserts the role of medical experts in asylum claims by torture survivors

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has ruled that the lower courts were wrong to override the conclusions of a medical expert when considering forensic evidence of torture in an asylum claim.

Invite : Festive Party with Kasai Masai band live : Dec 12th

The fabulous and terribly popular Kasai Masai band are playing Urban Equatorial Funk again for us at our Festive Party on Wednesday 12th December from 6pm at the Andover Estate Community Centre, Finsbury Park, London, N7 7RY. 

Last time Kasai Masai played for us, very few could resist getting up and dancing. Kasai Masai website here.

And there will of course be a feast.

We will be sharing tales of courage and survival, as well as remembering those who were removed from our communities. This is a chance for clinicians, lawyers, ex-detainees and others to get together in a relaxed atmosphere.
